TAXES. To collect or not to collect, is that the question?


Here are some general guidelines for ecommerce stores on the subject of collecting sales tax. Please realize that these are guidelines and not actual laws. You should contact your accountant, attorney or other legal counsel for exact laws and rules for your state.

  • Sales tax should be collected from customers if the shipping state is in the same state as the online retailer’s physical presence. The online retailers physical presence can be any one or more of the following :
    • Store
    • Business Office
    • Warehouse
    • Home Office
    • Merchant Bank
    • Many other places not listed
